I just got screwed into buying a used car without knowing it had a salvage tittle. Someone help me?
asked:
a little bit about me: I'm 18 years old and this is my first car…
I just bought a used car 1993 honda civic sedan from a guy off of craigslist for $1600. The guy posted on craigslist that it was a 1994 honda civic with 126,000 miles with a clean title. well, i rushed into buying it (I'm an idiot) without getting a carfax report. So i bought the car, and when i was driving it home i saw the pinkslip and it said SALVAGED!! i went from excited to depressed. The next day i registered the car under my name because i knew i wouldnt get my money back from that A-hole. Next, i got a carfax report and found out that it was salvaged, junk, rebuilt, and it had 231,000 original miles(i literally was crying). now i dont know if the ordometer was messed with or it had a new engine put in(the engine doesnt look bad it runs pretty good actually). My family is telling me that you learn from your mistakes and to live with it, just get it fixed and it will be fine as long as it gets you somewhere. Some people are saying to sell it but i dont want to be a hypocrite and go to hell like the guy who sold me the car.

I want to know what you have to say about this. I know i was being stupid at rushing through things when my family warned me about rushing it. I will have it checked by a mechanic and insured though. what would you do in this situation?

If I was that silly about $1600 of my money, I'd live with the result.
It's not like $1600 will get you much better if you kept shopping.
It runs? That's all you need for $1600 until you graduate from college.
I guess you could go to court with that ad in hand as proof, but I'm not sure most judges bite on ignorance as a defense. It's not like you are an orphan and do not know anyone who has bought a car without trouble before.

Just b/c the car is rebuilt or salvaged does not necessarily mean it is a bad car especially if there was no frame damage and the car was fixed back correctly. You can have this checked by a body shop. However, ur right u shouldnt have rushed into it and gotten a car fax first. Judging by the year of the car that mileage doesnt surprise me on a honda they go forever. But it was probably rolled back. If you sell the car just be honest and u wont go to hell. It might still be a good car u never know just get it checked and go from there.

You probably would not have bought it if it did not run and look ok, right? Just drive it and let it be a lesson. My brother had a salvage car that gave good service. We could not tell by looking at it how it had been damaged or repaired. The only thing you are out is paying a little bit more than you could have.

Well. You only spent $1600 so far. If you fix it up a bit and the car gets you around for a year or two, it'll owe you nothing, really. What needs to be fixed? Does it need to be fixed before it can be driven? Get estimates on what it needs before you do anything else.
OR – You can choose to re-sell it if you're willing to lose a little money now rather than investing more in a car that will always be a salvage vehicle, no matter how much you fix it up. If you sell it again now for $1000, all you've lost is $600, (well, and taxes and fees) right?
But if I was selling it, my conscience would make me declare the whole salvage title thing and take the loss. It is a kind of a tough live and learn situation, I know. Next car you buy, look for maintenance records, READ the paperwork before you sign anything, and get it inspected by an independent source.
It ***** that you got lied to, bud.

Sergio, I wouldn't do anything. I'd drive the car and enjoy it for as long as I could. The good news is you didn't pay much for the car. The bad news is you probably can't get insurance for it.
I'm not going to lecture you on what an idiot you were for not doing your research BEFORE spending your money. There will plenty of people to do that. You're young, you did something foolish. Believe me, this won't be your last mistake, you'll make plenty more as you grow up and mature.
But as long as the Civic looks decent, runs good and gets you where you need to go don't worry about anything else. Modify it, drive the **** out of it and when it dies, bury it. Just make sure you have fun along the way.

Really 1600 still isnt bad for a salvage car. sometimes salvage can be theft not just a totaled car. for a civic thats still not bad though. just drive the hell out of it. and you will very rarely find a honda with an original motor in it ne ways. i bought an integra that showed 250k on the odometer but i put a new motor in it and it runs great. i payed 1900 for it and the motor in it was still good when i bought it just wanted an upgrade.
you could have looked more into the car but its all said and done now so i wouldnt dwell on it. like i said just drive the hell out of it hondas/acuras are great cars.

Chill out. Its still worth pretty close to what you paid.
A $1600 car doesn't go down much for mileage or previous salvage.
