Should I buy a car with salvage title?
BB asked:
I'm thinking of buying this mercedes benz. It's 2001 and has 58 thousand miles on it. It's really nice in and out. Sunroof, leather seats, 6 cd changer etc…

The guy told me that he would sell it for $12000 but I offered him $9000. He refused it and I walked away. I came back to him the next day and offered him 10000 (Including tax, title fees). Again, he refused it. Now, we agreed on 10600 (Including tax, title fees and new sticker). He is even giving me 60 days warantty.
My brother told me not to buy it. And I liked the car. What should I do? Am I making the right decision?
Thanks for your help.
The car had an accident.
It has rebuilt salvage title.
Thanks guys! The 60 days warranty will cover the engine, electrical and two other important things. He will pay for it (100%) if problem occurs during these 60 day period.

Don't get it. You never know how bad the accident was. In my experience, no matter how good it was fixed, the car is NEVER the same. The price may be good, but I wouldn't get it. Spend the 10K on a nice used camry or accord. Or even a used BMW if you like the mercedes.

One of the keys to pricing a car is to effectively rate the car as the price will vary widely based on condition and mileage. Mileage is pretty obvious. You should base condition on a Carfax report (which would also help catch any odometer fraud) and your own review. This might give you more details on the salvage.
There are a bunch of places to check car prices on the Internet. NADA guides is one – but since they are owned by the car dealers association I never recommend them. KBB is another. Driverside.com is a new site and they have a couple of extras – great data showing price based on mileage; DriverSide Estimate where they search actual listings to find what cars are actually selling for in local markets; and estimates for trade in pricing.
Essentially any car is worth buying – at the right price. A vehicle with a salvage title should sell for a substantial discount!
Also – what does he mean by a warranty – his word? A purchased warranty?

If you can't by the car only for parts and for no more than $50, don't bother.

It will be a big mistake to purchase this vehicle.
Listen to your brother.
You need to know 2 things before you purchase:
1) You may not be able to get insurance for it. Check with an agent
2) You will have an extremely difficult time selling it.
If you buy this, the guy selling it to you painted sucker on your from the start.
A 60 day warranty is like offering almost nothing.
